The Abbey is built in two storeys with attics, the main south front having five bays which look out across the pleasure grounds. Anglesey Abbey is located in the village of Lode, a few miles from the city of Cambridge in England. A priory was built on the site of Anglesey Abbey between 1100 and 1135 and was converted into a country house around 1600. Anglesey Abbey now belongs to the National Trust and is open to the public.

The Anglesey Abbey Portrait was bequeathed along with Anglesey Abbey itself and all its contents to the British nation in 1966 on the death of Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1 st Lord Fairhaven. No further documentation for the provenance of the painting is available. When Lord Fairhaven purchased the house in 1926, it was empty.
