Habermas argues that there is, hence, a need to supplement analysis of the growth of systems of purposive-rational action (which he often characterized as steering media of system integration) with examination of mechanisms of communicative interaction (which he characterized within his Theory of Communicative Action as involving cultural reproduction, social integration, and socialization).
